MediaCoder 0.8.15 Build 5280

MediaCoder is a free software that converts the format of audio and video files. Use it if you have devices which only support a specific type of extension.

The interface may be a little overwhelming at first, especially for rookies, because there are so many featured included here. But advanced users will surely get a kick out of MediaCoder.

You first need to select the source file you wish to convert, whether it's a video or audio track, the format of the output file, additional settings if you want to, and Start Transcoding (or hit F5 on your keyboard).

MediaCoder supports a lot of formats, but not all commonly used ones can be found here, which is a pity.

There are a lot of additional features for each file type. For example, if you want to convert something to XviD format, you can enable high quality mode, greyscale, cartoon, quarter-pixel, or global motion compensation, while a FLAC output file's compression level can be configured.

The time for each file to complete conversion is excellent, and the quality is fairly maintained overall (as much as it can be).

While MediaCoder is busy converting something, CPU and memory resources are minimally consumed.

MediaCoder generally has a lot of functions, and these are usually explored only by expert users. But if you ever feel overwhelmed at some point, you can view the online support forum, or just switch to simple interface mode.

So, if you want an effective software that will convert your multimedia files, MediaCoder comes in handy. Again, too bad it's not compatible with more file extensions. But at least it's free!

XMedia Recode 3.1.2.0

XMedia Recode 3.1.2.0 is a software solution supposed to help you convert audio and video files, targeting both beginners and experienced users with an innovative approach.

The application works with most formats out there, but what’s more impressive is that it also has an option to convert DVD and Blu-Ray discs into any format you like.

But probably the ace up its sleeve is actually the way it manages to address novice user and more experienced ones at the same time.

First of all, those uninitiated have the option to choose one of the many built-in profiles for a one-click conversion job. For example, if you wish to convert an AVI video and transfer it on your iPhone, you have the option to pick the iPhone model and let the app do the whole job.

Freemake Video Converter 3.1.1.4. is a tool that can encode several video and formats to other extensions.

The tool recognizes the AVI, MP4, MPEG, WMV, 3GP, DVD, HD, MKV, MP3, WMA, FLAC formats and others, while its interface is very intuitive and attractive, worthy of Windows 7.

Once you have added files to the queue (the "drag and drop" method is supported), you can view their thumbnail, total time and audio/video settings, as well as preview the video in an external media player.

You can encode files to the AVI, MP4, WMV, DVD, MP3, Apple, Blu-ray and other profiles, once you have selected and edited a preset.

So, you can configure the frame size, width and height, adjustment, video codec, frame rate, bitrate and bitrate type, as well as select audio codec, channels, sample frequency rate and bitrate.

After you select the output destination, you can initiate the conversion process, during which you can visualize total progress and optionally shut down the computer after the task is completed.

A task can take a while to complete (even in the case of small files and default settings), but that's because Freemake Video Converter focuses on maintaining a good image and sound quality (which it accomplishes). The program also has well-explained how-to tutorials and an intro video.

However, the software uses a very high amount of system resources in its idle state, and puts a massive strain on the computer when a task is in progress. Also, it becomes difficult to navigate back and forth in the videos, in some cases (e.g. FLV to MPG, WMA to MPG).

All in all, Freemake Video Converter is a great tool for encoding audio and video files, but one that eats a lot of resources and that causes minor glitches in the case of some output files.
