Speccy 1.20.446 is a powerful system information tool that can show detailed stats on your hardware with minimum user input.

Once you launch the app, it automatically scans the computer and displays the information in a very well-organized interface, with the process taking less than a minute.

While the machine is a bit stressed up during this time, the hardware scanning process collects information on every single area of the system, including CPU, RAM, motherboard, graphics, hard drives, audio, peripherals and network.

SUMo 3.4.17.192 is a handy Windows software solution designed to help you keep the applications you're using up to date, providing a very simple way to find out whether there's any update available for a certain program or not.

Although it may sound a bit complicated, SUMo automatically scans your computer and analyzes the installed applications to determine if there's something to be updated or not.

Additionally, you can perform the whole job manually by simply dragging and dropping an executable file over the main window, thus letting SUMo conduct a scan and check for updates.

The interface is quite straightforward and intuitive, showing all installed apps and their versions, alongside with potential updates that may exist online.

Plus, there are dedicated buttons at the bottom of the main window to check, scan, add, remove or ignore programs, so it's easy to manage the installed applications.

Although it all sounds like milk and honey, it's not. While SUMo works with most popular programs, it fails to detect updates for some other applications and this seems to happen pretty often. Plus, “false positives” emerge every once in a while and although you're informed that a new update is available, it's not.

Of course, you need an Internet connection to use SUMo and although some users complain that it's terribly slow, everything worked like a breeze during our test.

All in all, SUMo may prove to be quite a handy software solution and as long as it can be used at absolutely no cost, it's one of the tools that could become a must-have for many experienced users out there.

In addition, you can access "Disk Management" to create a simple partition (basic, spanned or stripped), configure disk conversion options, as well as extend and shrink partitions. But you can also open the Windows Device Manager, set CrystalDiskInfo to automatically run at startup, enable advanced disk search, select your preferred language, change the font, and more.

The application uses a low amount of system resources. It comes with a help file that could have better explained the features but didn't cause us any problems during our tests. We mainly recommend CrystalDiskInfo to power users.

Recuva 1.44.778

Recuva 1.44.778 is a recovery tool that restores any files you think you have permanently deleted from the computer.

After a brief installation, you can access the Recuva wizard for simple steps to follow, in case you don't want to deal with advanced features.

You can specify the type of files you are trying to recover, whether they are pictures, music, documents, videos, compressed archives, emails or other types, as well as their last known location.

Recuva can be configured to search a media card or an iPod, in My Documents, Recycle Bin, in any other specific location, or the entire system and all connected devices.

If previous attempts have been made to recover the respective files but failed, you can enable Deep Scan, which is a thorough scanning process that takes a longer time.

Expert users can enjoy Recuva without using the simple wizard. All they have to do is select the drive, scanning mode (for files or contents), and file type.

When results are displayed, you can view the current state of each file by checking out the bullet color (green - excellent, orange - poor, red - unrecoverable). Plus, you can view useful information on each file, such as size, last modification and access time, comments, number of clusters allocated at offset, number of overwritten file clusters, and hex mode.

File recovery can take a long time (depending on the size and state of the file), and if the output destination is in the same drive, Recuva tells you this decreases the chances of a successful recovery.

Additionally, you can overwrite files, which means they will be completely deleted. However, this doesn't always work on files with red bullets (Recuva tells you if the operation was a success or not).

If you use Recuva to securely delete overwritten files, the software will overwrite any residual sectors and change the file status to "unrecoverable", but you can still view the contents of the files (these are recoverable too).

Except for Deep Scan, Recuva works extremely fast, and uses a fair amount of system memory. Too bad it doesn't offer quick access to a help file (Online Help requires you use a Priority Support account for Piriform).

All in all, Recuva offers immediate solutions for file recovery and is one of the best choices in this software category.

CrystalDiskInfo 5.2.1

CrystalDiskInfo 5.2.1. is a software that lets you view information on your hard drive and some external drives.

You should pay attention when installing this product. Since it is ad-supported, the program offers to download and install third-party software that it doesn't need to fully function.

Once you initiate the application, CrystalDiskInfo automatically displays a list of details on your hard drive.

The user interface of the program is standard, but novice users would probably have a hard time understanding the information displayed here.

You can view the drive model name and disk size, firmware, serial number, interface type, transfer mode, drive letter, buffer size, NV cache size, rotation rate, power on count and on hours, and more.

Furthermore, you can view the health status and temperature of the drive, as well as S.M.A.R.T. information (e.g. "Read Error Rate", "Spin-Up Time", "Start/Stop Count", "Seek Error Rate", "End-to-End Error"), such as current, worst, threshold and raw values.

In addition, you can access "Disk Management" to create a simple partition (basic, spanned or stripped), configure disk conversion options, as well as extend and shrink partitions. But you can also open the Windows Device Manager, set CrystalDiskInfo to automatically run at startup, enable advanced disk search, select your preferred language, change the font, and more.

The application uses a low amount of system resources. It comes with a help file that could have better explained the features but didn't cause us any problems during our tests. We mainly recommend CrystalDiskInfo to power users.

TeraCopy 2.3 Beta2

TeraCopy 2.3 Beta2 is a nifty little utility that speeds up the copying process of data between directories, physical hard drives or over the network.

When it moves files, it skips bad sectors and reports these errors at the end of the operation. You can also access it via the Windows Explorer context menu. If you prefer to do it over its interface, the only way to add files is by drag and drop. Multiple items can be loaded by selecting them while holding the ‘Ctrl’ key and dropping them into TeraCopy’s GUI.

If you click the "More" button, you can also see the size and status of each file found in the respective folder, and whether it was successfully copied or not.

Our test was made with a 9.89GB folder (let the record show we installed the software on Windows 7). TeraCopy managed to copy it in 10 minutes and 47 seconds, and the status for each file read “Ok”. The speed is outstanding and it suffices to say that it outgrows Windows’ native tool.

What we noticed about TeraCopy and is worth telling is the fact that Windows' normal copy, move and paste functions are overwritten by TeraCopy’s commands during its deployment. That means that you are no longer able to use Windows’ built-in Cut / Copy / Paste, because these have been replaced by TeraCopy.

If you wish to revert to Windows’s original functions regarding the copying / moving data process, the only solution is to uninstall TeraCopy.

All in all, TeraCopy makes quite the file mover. On the upside, it’s faster that Windows’ native tool, but on the downside, it replaces the system’s original commands for Copy / Move operations.
